Kate McMahon is a freelance Copywriter and Marketing Consultant specialising in the arts, education and not-for-profit sectors. Kate describes her ideal clients as 'businesses with heart', and it's hard not too see where that has rubbed off in the way Gidget Media embraces it's client briefs. Kate's blog on Gidget Media is an impressive feat, breaking down the big ideas around online marketing into bite sized morsels for those of us with more training in 'heart' than business. Kate's interview is a must read for any small business entrepreneur.

Who are you and what do you do?
I'm the founder and head honcho of Gidget Media. Gidget Media helps businesses communicate their message with the world clearly and succinctly, with a bit of fun thrown in on the side.
I studied a Bachelor of Arts (majoring in Literature and Film, minoring in Philosophy) and simultaneously completed a Diploma of Professional Writing and Editing.
I started out working as a proof-reader and sub-editor at a magazine, and worked my way into the world of online through working with La Trobe University as a web content writer.
I realised that I love the marriage of technology and language, and I've continued to pursue this now for over 8 years.
Why did you choose to start your own business?
As a creative soul, I've always found it difficult to work in a corporate environment. I need my freedom, and freelancing gives me just that.
I also have a strong problem-solving mind, and have realised that many businesses often just need that initial boost and training to get them going.
I love stepping into these kinds of businesses, helping them get started in the right direction, and then giving them the skills to sustain this direction on their own.
What piece of advice would you give to any business, organisation or individual that is looking to improve their public engagement?
Online marketing is one of the cheapest and quickest ways to connect with your audience.
Understanding what your supporters want from you is key to creating and maintaining a genuine connection. No-one wants to be sold to. We just want to feel like we belong. Invite your supporters to join your community, and let the love follow!
How does a typical work day pan out for Gidget Media?
A typical work day begins with strong coffee and a brisk walk.
As a freelancer, self-discipline and self-knowledge is key. I've learned that I'm most productive in the morning, so I have to make the most of that precious time by getting up early and getting out of the house before 9. Every weekday.
I try to not let emails distract me in the morning, as this is my 'deep-focus' time. Writing requires intense concentration, where multi-tasking is code for procrastination.
What is the best business advice you’ve ever received?
One of my old bosses gave me some advice when he heard I was starting a business. He's pretty successful, so I took heed! He told me to always under-promise and over-deliver. I definitely try to do this.
Savvy, Sass or Study? I wouldn't choose any of them. It takes passion. Passion will lead you towards all three.
Want - learning or opportunity? Learning. I'm always learning, and never feel like I'll stop. I certainly hope I don't!
Superpower? I've always wanted to own a teleport. Is there a superpower that works like that? Better than flying...
